Why do my listings have the same Best Sellers Rank?
Recently, some of you may have noticed that some of your product listings have exactly the same Best Sellers Rank, in the same product category, at the same time. How is this possible? It looks like Amazon has made yet another change to its platform, this time affecting the Best Sellers Rank.
What is Best Sellers Rank?
The Amazon Best Sellers Rank (BSR), also known as the “Sales Rank” is a score that Amazon assigns a specific product based on historical sales data. It is updated on an hourly basis. The lower the BSR, the better.
You can find a product’s BSR on multiple pages, including the product’s detail page. For example, the dog collar shown below is the #1 best seller in the ‘Headcollar’ category, the #5 seller in ‘Dog Training & Behavior Aids’, and #144 in the broad ‘Pet supplies’ category.
Up until about two weeks ago, Amazon assigned a unique rank to each and every listing (ASIN) in a product category. That means that each variation of a product (sometimes known as twisters or parent-child listings) would have its own BSR.
What has changed?
Reviewbox’s BSR monitoring indicates that Amazon has begun assigning the same BSR to all ASINs within a twister group within some product categories. For the dog collar example above, all the variations of size and color have the same BSR.
This new pattern is not limited to the pet supplies category. We have observed it in computer networking equipment, office supplies, health & beauty, and home improvement products.
The exact timeframe of this change differs between product categories. In some categories, the sales rank has gone back to the ‘normal’ behavior where each listing (ASIN) has its own rank. But in other product categories, the change may be here to stay.
How will this affect my listings?
If you have one variation within a twister that sells better than the others, this change may be good because all the listings will inherit the best rank within the twister group. However, if different products are twisted together, this change could be confusing to customers.
